Working on a project that I know will require ALOT of layering via chroma keying or what have you. I was wondering, what was the best way to get a smooth blend of layers so it doesn't look like they're layers?

Are there camera angle tricks or tutorials I need to watch?

What program is better for smooth layering, After Effects or Vegas?

Any assistance would be appreciated

p.s.-also, lighting, shading and smoke/dust seem to be elude me as well. any tips on lighting with WMV or WMapV?

p.s.s.- edit is a screenshot of what i'm talking about...see under the bug? has no shadow. also the outline around his body isn't exactly fluid, you can see a few odd color pixels.

There is such word in terminology - Feather. This function does what you need, blurs the edges among layers.

That specific outline was created not by chroma key itself, but by some build-in color correction function (of chroma key plug-in). Just lurk for it.

Lighting, Shading and Smoke with Dust in WMV? Forget about it. Use WMV for capturingin the highest quality as possible only. Everything else just ain't capable of serious machinima there.

P.S. If your movie is going to be in the same style as the screen below, I'd suggest to create some color corrected themes for it, so it looks more attractive :)

For dusk effect you'll need to find some appropriate layer, I haven't tried that before, but probably Particle Illusion has one. There was some VideoCopilot.com tutorial where they have shown the way you can shoot your head off (soldier with a shaking gun) and they used dust and fog there. IF you're so lucky to find it :)

Forsuch shadows simply make a circle in Paint or anything else. Then rotate it in 3D, apply opacity and blur.
